Conflict and Team Development

According to Bruce Tuckman, an educational psychologist, there’s a five-stage development process that most teams follow to become high performing. They are: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. This development model explains that as the team develops maturity and ability, relationships establish, and leadership style changes to more collaborative or shared leadership. In the forming stage, there would be almost no conflict. In the storming stage, there would be unhealthy conflict where members would be not be eager to come to a consensus. In the norming stage, there would be healthy conflict with observable conflict resolution skills. The team could become high performing only when it has gone through the first 3 stages. If your team must become high performing, you need to stop avoiding conflict, but learn to resolve conflict in a healthy way.
